Catch the Scum…. Sounded like an appropriate name for the mission. Chris looked down the main street of the village with disgust. The place was filthy and really run down compared to the capital. It was such an eye sore that he wondered why the government hasn’t come in and modernized the whole thing. Or at least give the citizens the tools needed to fix it themselves. With a sigh he entered the village.
From a distance the city looked bad. Up close it looked much worse. Looking around Chris saw some children in rags playing with a mangy dog. The women wore a permanent guarded expression and the men sized him up as a possible target. Chris kept a confident exterior as he walked through town; keeping his eyes on his surroundings. How was he supposed to find a few needles in this haystack?
“Stop, thief!” Startled Chris looked in the direction of the noise. Can it really be that simple? Apparently it could, as he saw a man running towards him as if being chased. He was holding a bag of gold in his hand and an evil smirk on his lips. A merchant was chasing him through the streets, obviously the one who shouted.

Without a word Chris stepped into the man’s path; forcing him to stumble to a stop. He looked at Chris like he was a little brat and sneered. “Outta my way punk.” Chris just calmly lifted his hand and focused on the minerals around him. Red particles flowed from the ground into his hand; fusing together to form a red gem. “I think you’d better give me the gold.”
The thief’s eyes grew wide as he saw the gem form; muttering a curse under his breath. “A wizard? Are you from Shark Fang?!” A dark look appeared over Chris’s face as he glared at the man. “No. I’m much worse.” With a flick of his wrist he sent the gem at the man. The man was so surprised that he didn’t even have time to dodge, and took the gem full force. Upon contact the gem shattered and the resulting explosion knocked the man off his feet. He lay on the ground and seemed to have the wind knocked out of him.
Without hesitation Chris picked up the fallen bag and handed it to the merchant. “If you can get me some rope and point out the others like him then I’ll take care of them.” He looked down at the man with a slight smile. “They need to be taught a lesson in the law.”

Finding the scum was both easy and hard after that. Easy because after the town heard about Chris’s deeds they were more than eager to point out the lowlifes and criminals of the city. It was also easy because after hearing that he was a mage many of the weaker ones just gave up after they were revealed.
However it was hard because the people weren’t just pointing out the scum. They were also pointing out friends, neighbors, and even bullies who owed them money or something. Some of the kids even pointed out their own mothers for making them clean their rooms. Chris had feelings that after ‘declining’ such charges the kids were going to get a serious lecture. After that it was just a matter of finding the ones who were actually guilty.
Then there were the ones that simply resisted. Those were the most troubling for Chris as he was forced to use his magic in order to deal with them. After each bout he was becoming more a more exhausted; despite the bravado he displayed on the contrary. Most of the ones who resisted weren’t even guilty of anything; they just liked to fight. More than once he wished he could just flash his government identification, but he knew that it would cause more problems.
Finally after selecting five of the most troublesome scum Chris gave the others an ultimatum. If they didn’t clean up their act he was going to personally come back and show them just how terrifying magic could be. Most seemed to be affected by his threat, while a few just grudgingly agreed. It was a temporary measure, but Chris was confident that it would help in the long run. So with his prisoners in tow he headed back to the capital. Hopefully he wouldn’t have to return anytime soon.
