During the daytime, the dark whispers were bad enough, but while she slept they ran wild, the voices of murdered and wronged souls all screaming into her mind, most of them telling her that she should just die. That she was the child of a filthy bloodline that brought only despair and misery.
It had begun to weight heavily upon her, to the point that her faithful companion, Atlas, was nearly certain that she was slipping into depression. It saddened him to see his master, with so much magical power, so helpless in her own body, because of the nature of her magic. It seemed as though her Sin Eater magic was eating her alive - a slow descent into the darkness that left her formerly bright green eyes looking hollow.
"N-no... I didn't do anything like that..." She whispered in her sleep, apparently trying to argue with someone, or something, though her voice was terribly meek and unsteady, "I'm not like them... I just share a name with them..."
In his owl form, her perched on the headboard of the somewhat questionable bed that Riley was sleeping in. This was another uneasy night for her, as she was constantly tossing and turning, frowning and mumbling in her sleep, clearly tormented, though there was nothing he could do for her. As time passed, in spite of the constant jostling of the bed, he too was eventually weary enough to fall asleep, puffing up his chest and tucking his wings close to his body. He had tried to fight it, but it was inevitable. Even the 'god of birds' needed to sleep at some point.

It was close to midnight in Adonis. Battler had finally caught up to the former Guild Master, Riley, who was staying at an Inn. Using a new information network he had established in Onibas, whose sources he won't reveal, Battler managed to track his target all the way to where he is now. In his hand was a large bottle of fruit juice. He had gone off the alcohol while in the Demon World, and Fruit Juice was the closest taste he could find to that nectar water he found there. Locating Riley's room, Battler walked inside the Inn and headed to her room door to find it locked. Obviously. But he had a trick of sorts. Sticking his finger to the keyhole, his finger lit up with a golden light at the fingertip, going inside the keyhole as a turning could be heard after a while, unlocking the door. Although he hasn't even begun to scratch the potential of Golden Magic, he at least knew the basics of shaping and reforming light. Though he probably wouldn't be able to unlock a door again without breaking it.
After entering the room and finding Riley and Atlas asleep, he sat down quietly on a chair, opening his fruit juice and taking a large drink of it. Putting down the bottle, he pulled a black box out of his pocket and let it activate with his magic, causing the shape of a transparent piano to appear. It wouldn't disturb anyone else and Battler chose the targets for hearing it to be Riley and Atlas, as well as himself obviously. Just looking at her sleep, he could tell she was having problems. And for her to leave the guild, something must have happened. But regardless, he would follow her. He owed Riley a lot, enough to give his life should it be required. And so he would accompany her to wherever she was going. He still was weak and had a long way to go, but the least he could do was keep her company. Letting his fingers strike the keys, he began playing some music for the troubled woman laying in bed. Click Here.

When the music sounded, Riley curled a little around a pillow that she was hugging, quieting a bit, her body falling still as the sound apparently soothed her, if only a little, it was enough to calm her down, or at least drown out the voices that were near constantly plaguing her.
Atlas, on the other hand, startled awake, his large eyes gazing at Battler through the darkness, clearly alarmed by the sudden sound. He fluffed up a bit angrily, but soon realized that the man sitting at the table was one her recognized. He didn't look all that pleased to see that he had somehow forced his way into the room, but the music seemed to soothe his master, if only a little, so he allowed it.
As the song ended, Riley's eyes slowly slid open, catching the last few lines of the song, she narrowed her eyes, blurry vision gazing at the ceiling, "Battler?" She asked, recognizing the aura that was coming from the intruder, "... What are you doing here?"

Letting the magical piano fade away, Battler put the box back in his pocket and picked up his drink, taking a mouthful of it while looking towards Riley. Crossing his leg over while leaning back in the chair, he thought up how to explain what he was doing there without giving away his real reason. Maybe lie which Riley will most likely figure out, or just be mysterious. Having a pause after Riley spoke to think up what to say, Battler opened up his mouth. "I've got my reasons for tagging along. I guess you could say our paths are lined up at the moment. To be blunt, I'm sticking with you for now until I feel I need to go. No objections. And why? Well, that's my secret."
Putting the lid on the bottle of fruit juice, he chucked it onto the bed so Riley could have a drink. And Atlas too if he wanted some. Riley would probably think it was alcohol at first considering how Battler use to be. Ever since leaving the Demon World, his broken habits haven't returned and he's changed his ways. He feels a bit estranged from the guild now despite not being that close to them in the first place. He also hasn't met Sakura in a long time. He wasn't quite tired himself since he had napped along the way, also causing him to lag behind Riley since each time he slept, she got further ahead. "With my ex-family's fortune, the rent at my apartment which I expected to be huge after three years is still normal, and thus my rent can be paid for without me having to check up on it. At least for a few years. I have Jess taking care of that for me. So nothing ties me down at the moment."
Stretching his arms and back, a variety of cracks could be heard from his spine as they realigned themselves, giving a small feeling of relief. "So... Any requests for the piano?"
.... I forgot his next door neighbors name =P The one who Riley met the last time she was at his apartment.

She wasn't angry, by any means, and as close as she was to him, she did not want him to be there with her. It was because she cared for him that she did not wish for him to be with her during this particularly dark time.
The young woman sat herself up on the bed, wearing a white tee shirt and a khaki colored pair of shorts as pajamas. Her hair was a bit messing from all of the tossing and turning, but considering the three years they had spent together, he had probably seen worse.
"I'm not playing around, Battler. I left the guild, I am going to be venturing places that I should not be, searching for answers that I probably should not know. I would only get you into trouble," she softly pointed out. Slowly, she crossed her legs under her body where she sat, picking up the bottle of juice, she inspected it, opened it, and sniffed it lightly before taking a sip. He was being fairly stubborn, which was nothing new really, but she didn't seem to be handling it as well as she usually did. She was massaging at a temple with two of her fingers.
Her green eyes were listless, and a bit hollow looking as she continued to try and soothe her weary, aching mind. "You are in danger if you are with me," she went on to murmur, the voices of the lost souls once more plaguing her mind. She ignored his offer of taking a request for the piano, in part because she was rather serious at the moment and that would take away from her point, and also because she really didn't know many songs.

Pulling out his black box again, Battler searched through his memory for a reasonably serious piece of music. [Click Here] Starting on the next piece, Battler looked towards Riley while playing. He still had his Magic Piano in the Demon World, so he had something to do in his spare time. He had learned more songs to play and also how to play without looking (touch-play) and how to speak and play. It was quite handy because he often had to keep an eye on the demons around him as he played. "Have you forgotten, Riley? We both spent three years under constant threat of death. I may not be strong, but I can still survive in a great amount of danger. Especially in the last year during the Demon Wars, there was more danger where I was than you think."
Reminding himself of that, he remembered the scars he still carries as a result of fighting. He hadn't informed Riley and Fawn of the injuries he had gotten and left the demon companions to heal him. The three Mages were separated during the majority of the war since they had multiple fronts to take care of. As the song ended, Battler unbuttoned the first few buttons of his shirt and pulled his left arm out, showing it to Riley. There was a long scar across his forearm and a scar on his shoulder from being pierced by a pointed weapon. Putting his clothes back on properly, he started onto the next piano piece. [Click Here] This one seemed more melancholy but serious enough. "Since you are no longer Guild Master, you can't tell me what to do anymore. So, I'll go wherever I wish. And that happens to be following you. You can't shake me off that easily. Besides, being with you may be safer than by myself."

Riley asked, exhaling deeply, as she played with the bottle of juice that he had thrown to her. "Perhaps that is why I do not wish to bring you along with me... I would rather you not have to be in such danger again..." She murmured, clearing her throat awkwardly - knowing that she was likely the greatest danger, for the simple fact that she was the unexpected danger.
She watched him with a slightly quirked brow as he began to unbutton some of his clothing, though it was apparently to show her some of his scars. As he fixed his clothing and returned to playing the piano, she hoisted herself slowly off of the bed, moving to the piano, she turned her back to it, leaning on it for a moment, testing it. When she was sure it would not give way, she hoisted herself to sit atop the piano, out of the way of his playing, of course.
At his words, she chuckled a bit, raising a hand to rub a little at her face, "you didn't even listen to me then," she pointed out, shaking her head a little, she rest her hands limply upon her thighs, just sort of staring out of the window, "and what is to stop me from ensuring that you do not follow me?" She wondered, slowly drawing her somewhat listless eyes back to him, the voices in her head once more crawling forwards and tormenting her, causing her to furrow her brow a little as she attempted to inwardly fight off her own demons.
"I'm afraid there is something that even I will not be able to protect you from..." She mumbled, handing her head at this point, to simply stare at her feet.

[Click Here] Pondering how to reply to what Riley said to him, Battler shrugged and showed a bit of expression on his matured face, showing a hint of his old recklessness from before going to hell and back. "You? Stop me? Hah. No way. Won't happen. Can't see it. That is because..." Closing his eyes for a moment while playing some more of the piano, he opened his eyes again while looking at Riley seriously. "I trust that you won't." The song this time around had ups and downs to it, being melancholy at one point and then serious as if in battle mode the next. Battler himself was as mysterious as always. It was never easy to tell what was going on in his mind. Even if he stayed with Riley like he said, he would probably disappear on his own from time to time with no explanation or warning. After the Demon World, it was just a habit to do so and the two of them were use to it. Hearing what Riley said at the end, Battler thought in his head about some philosophical things which he may be able to quote at this point. Or make up on the spot.
""Experience isn't something you get until after you need it." Or something like that. Take life how you want it, without regretting, and the result will be good even if it is a bad one because you made it that way. I'll follow you for my own reasons. If there is something even you can't protect me from, then it was because I did what I wanted, but I won't regret it. If I survive, then I'll have more experience. ... It seems I've become more talkative than I would like to be." With that said, Battler finished the song he was playing and started a new one [Click Here]. He was nearly ready for bed because of all this playing and he was starting to slouch. Hopefully they could finish this conversation soon and go to sleep, then carry on in the morning if needed. "I've been tailing you for a while already. If you truly didn't want me along, I wouldn't have been able to follow you for this long."

Riley chuckled a little at his words, her hands moving to lightly fold over one another in her lap as she tipped her head back slightly, half open eyes gazing towards the window. She watched the moonlight spill into the room, the pale glow casting a faint light over half of the room, while leaving the rest in darkness. It sounded a bit silly, perhaps, but Riley often felt like she had much in common with the moon. While a portion of the moon was usual reflecting the beams of the sun, making it appear bright, it also had a dark side, one that it was never rid of.
Her own darkness was the fault of her magic, and to be entirely frank she feared it - not to a degree that crippled her, but enough to keep her on her toes and alert. The Sin Eater magic did do a number of her, and yet, it had not been the breaking point that had caused the darkness to spill into her body. It outside force had been to blame for that, but the damage was done. Pandora's box had been opened, it's evils spilled out, and try as she may she could not fight it, could not force the evils back into the box and seal them away forever.
With a disheartened sigh she peered towards Battler, noting that his shoulders had slouched, a sure sign that he was getting tired. Certainly, he had followed her all the way from Onibas, so he must have been at least a little tired, especially since he was babbling in a philosophical nature. The young woman gave a bit of a chuckle, extending her hand to lightly pet the side of his face, she soon moved it to ruffle at his crimson colored hair. With a light thud her bare feet hit the floor and she turned towards him, hands resting lightly on her hips as the voices began to whispered softly into her mind once more. They were never quiet for long, so she believed it would be in her best interest to try and get to sleep while they were still being 'polite'.
"Come, Battler," she said, her voice soft as she made her way towards the bed that she had earlier crawled out of, "we have both had a long day, we can decide what we will do in the morning," with a flop, Riley squirmed under the covers of the bed, which was fairly large, "for now, come to bed and get some rest. It will be just like old times, though we are missing someone," she pointed out, curling up on her side, she tucked a head under her pillow, green eyes drifting to the man as she waited to see what he would do. After a moment, she slid a ring off of her finger, practically tossing it at a nightstand. In spite of this action, her intentions seemed innocent enough, her body having curled around a pillow slightly.
As she did this, her feathered companion seemed to arch a brow. Hopping along the bed posts, Atlas' clawed feet grabbed at the ring. Here he paused a moment, seeing if she protested, but as she did not he simply flew out the window with it, disappearing into the night.

Noting Riley's words, Battler nodded lightly as he stood up and let the magic piano fade. Picking up the black box, he put it inside his clothes and then watched Riley for a moment. Hearing what she said, he showed a wry smile. "If I remember correctly, I slept on the floor for quite some time before being elevated to the status of "Bed Pillow". And that was a year or so ago." Walking to the bed side and placing all of his swords down on his side of the bed, he watched the nocturnal pet of Riley's fly out the window carrying a ring. He never got too much into Riley's business before so he had no idea of the significance of a her Ring. If it was something like a declaration of one's status in a community or society, then it would be quite a lot. But it may be something much more simple than that for Riley. Dwelling on her words for a moment longer, Battler looked out the window for a while.
"It was funny to see Fawn grow up. Us older people don't change that much compared to those in their teens. Hope she's doing well." When they entered the Demon Realm, even Battler was a teen but he had long since given up his childhood by then. His innocence had been lost and so he tried to protect Fawn's while in the Demon World, if only a little. Though it didn't seem to work out as planned. While he was gone, she changed on the inside. Sitting on the edge of the bed facing away from Riley, Battler mauled over the past in his head. He didn't bother removing any clothes but at least left his shoes at the bedside. If he had to jump up quickly, it was easier to be dressed with shoes at the side along with any weapons. A habit he couldn't get rid of. Laying down on top of the sheets wearing his clothes, Battler rested on his side facing Riley. Usually there would be a girl between them, separating them.
"Get a good nights rest, girly. Let troubles melt away with the sound of the night. May your fears be calmed by the tides of your dreams. With a friend at your side 'til you wake, may your mind, your soul, and your body... be at peace." Every now and then when times were hard in the Demon World, Battler would do this prayer before sleeping. As he whispered it as best he could with his deep voice, he stroked Riley's hair and finished with a kiss on the forehead. Following that, he wriggled a hand to hers and gripped it for reassurance that he was there. He fell asleep almost straight away after that with not a sound to disturb the silence. The sound of the wind, of people on the streets. Insects making noise by the window, and the illumination of the moon. So a day ended.

Riley chuckled a little where she lay, her fingers running slowly through her hair as she pushed a few stray strands of her dark locks from her face, "if I recall, you preferred it that way as well, Mister Myrddin?" She lightly taunted, giving a bit of a sigh as she continued to hug the pillow that she had grasped against her torso. Lifting her head, she peered over her shoulder, out the window. The moon was still lighting up the room, covering the side of the bed that she was on, not that she seemed to mind it any.
Staring at the nearly full moon for a few long moments, she slowly lay her head down once more, watching Battler as he removed his weapons and plopped onto the edge of the bed. The young woman stretched a little lazily, feeling the familiar pounding in her skull that told her the whispers would not keep quiet for long. Watching him for a few long moments, she nodded her head softly, "we changed a lot as well, just not in a physical sense," she pointed out, of course referring to the fact that he had matured considerably during their time in the strange, hellish world. Personality wise, she believed that Battler had changed the most, thinking herself to be mostly unchanged, if only because certain aspects of her personality (such as her motherly side) had intensified rather than entirely new traits developing from nothing.
Giving a soft chuckle as he merely removed his shoes, a practice she had often seen in the demon world, she lay her cheek upon the pillow, watching Battler as he lay down to face her, also noticing the lack of Fawn curled up between them. In a sense, they had both become parents while they were in the demon world, having a much younger person to take care of (though they were by no means old themselves), "she seems to be doing better now that we are back," Riley assured, allowing her eyes to slowly drift shut as she heaved a bit of a sigh.
Hearing the familiar words, she could not help but smile a bit. She never thought that there would be a time in her life that she would have to face something more frightening than the demonic world that they had been stuck in for so long, but here she was, facing an even greater trial, even if it was only on a personal scale. It almost made her long to be in that world again. At least if she was there, the darkness in her would be free to rampage on all of the evil demons present, but in Earthland the result would be much more tragic...
Feeling his lips brush her forehead, green eyes fluttered open for a moment, peering at him as she felt his hand take her own. Offering a slight smile the former guild master watched as he fell asleep, before slowly allowing her own eyes to drift shut.

In the morning...
Battler woke up rather normally. Somehow during the night he had rolled off the bed and ended up sleeping on the floor next to his shoes with a hand on one of his swords. Seeing the roof as he opened his eyes, he couldn't help but sigh. He wasn't really uncomfortable, but just disappointed he spent another night on something hard. Sitting up and looking around, he remembered where he was. He had a rather dreamless sleep like usual. He had just gotten use to having no dreams and then waking up the next day feeling groggy but needing to get to work on things. This morning wasn't the least bit refreshing and he was still feeling groggy as always. Reluctantly getting up, he walked over to the bathroom and began running the cold water tap. Leaving it running for a while, he stared at the forcet, watching the water run. Every time he looked at water, he would be half expecting it to come out a blood red.
Cupping his hands under the running water, he gathered as much as he can and then smothered his face in it, hoping to get rid of that morning groggy feeling that he hated. Doing it several times, he finally turned the tap off and left his head over the sink since he didn't have a towel. Since he wet the forelocks of his hair, drying wouldn't be that easy anyway. Grabbing around until he found the hand towel, Battler dried his face and walked into the kitchen area of the apartment. Checking the ingredients that were available, he thought of what he could make for breakfast. He wasn't much of a cook but seeing as he lived alone he knew the basics. Finding what he was looking for, Battler picked out the bread, eggs, milk, butter, syrup, cheese and luncheon. Putting the pan on the element, he began cooking his own version of french toast.
A four stack of french toast with some maple syrup, cheese and a slice of luncheon in each layer. Making three stacks, two for himself and one for Riley, Battler took about twenty minutes to do this. His juice from last night would be warm so he checked the fridge and found some orange juice which he poured into two glasses and placed them on the table with the food. If the French Toast wasn't to Riley's liking, there was enough time and ingredients to cook something else up. Walking over to the bedside and grabbing his weapons, he placed one leaning up against the wall by the door, another by the window and the third by the kitchen which was close to the table. Putting his shoes back on, he walked over to Riley who he stroked the cheek of while speaking. "Breakfast is ready, Riley."

She did not wake, but she was restless, her fingers tensing and clawing at the sheets, her legs twitching and stiff with anxiety, while the rest of her body, curled around the pillow, was in a similar state. Her mind was constantly plagued by her magic, the power to 'devour' sings - and there were no sins greater than that of her own blood. The murdered voices of hundreds upon hundreds of people constantly whispered to her, saying the same things that they always had, only much louder. It was a lot like there was a chorus of chanting in her own head, which practically begged her to die, so that they might rest in piece knowing her damned bloodline would have dwindled down to a single member (one that was unlikely to reproduce, at that).
The effects were not entirely invisible to the naked or inexperienced eye, in fact, it had begun to take on a somewhat physical form that manifested directly over her heart. The skin there, though she kept it carefully covered, was tainted by the Sin Eater magic. It had taken on an appearance similar to that of her 'Blood Soul', giving off the same sort of foreboding, dark atmosphere as the weapon, while also holding the same color and eerie appearance.
As she was awoken, Riley was not immediately away of the fact that the 'taint' had spread through her body even more so, this time having formed a line of the side of her neck, about an inch thick, which ended about halfway up her cheek. The line did not simply cut off, rather it seemed to split into many smaller, vein like, trails that eventually disappeared. They did not seem to cause her any physical pain, though the young woman did look rather worn out as she peered curiously over to Battler. Her green eyes blinked a little sleepily, dazed as he cheek was stroked, but she slowly crawled out of bed at his words, the scent of breakfast drifting across her nose intrigued her quite a bit as she clambered to her feet.
With a bit of a stretch, and hair that was fluffy from rolling around so much, Riley made her way over to the small table, where she gently took a seat. Stifling a yawn, she slowly took her food, inspecting it curiously before casting a glance to Battler, offering a kind smile. "Thank you, Battler... And good morning," she said, giving a bit of a laugh, which sounded a little forced.
